Design
All bodywork on the Asus L510MA is plastic, however, the lid incorporates a thick layer that appears and appears like an improvement over the Asus VivoBook L203MA, which had a thinner plastic that didn’t withstand the shocks and pushes of orbit. Even with the thick layer, it remains fairly portable at just 2.31 pounds and 0.67 inches thick. The fanless CPU and eMMC storage is also weight savers and contributes to the package’s portability.
However, the 15-inch display is bright enough for our liking. It has an FHD (1920 x 1080), and the matte finish is a good choice for working out. It’s a lively option if you’re shopping for word processing or web browsing, and a great choice for photos and videos.
Port selection is well rounded, including USB 2.0, USB 3.2, USB Type-C, HDMI, audio jack combo, and micro-SD card. Wireless connectivity comes in the way of Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), and an included webcam on the upper bezel. All these ports will prove useful for docking all your peripherals.
Keyboard & Touchpad
On the Asus Laptop L510MA keyboard, you have a number pad on the right side of the main keyboard. Not everyone can benefit from having a number pad, but for those studying math, science, and business, it’s a great addition to a budget laptop.
Still, the keyboard is pretty basic, with very light keys and very little tactile feedback. The Enter key, alone, is painted luminescent yellow, and it gives an otherwise plain deck some little style accents.
Performance
ASUS L510MA-DS04 with Intel Celeron processors, expectations are always low, but with today’s Celerons in performance to match tomorrow’s i3 CPUs, we couldn’t ask for more. The Celeron N4020 is also a small upgrade over the bottom 4000 model with a lot of caches, however, whereas it’s ok to run workplace applications, writing multimedia systems and gaming can be a bit of a stretch.
This fanless CPU of is ranked among the mid-range mobile processors, paired with 4GB RAM, 128GB eMMC storage, and Intel UHD Graphics 600 chip. This is enough for web browsing and office applications, and certainly the simplest games. For budget gaming, you’ll be able to contemplate the Asus TUF FX505GT-AB73 with a passionate Nvidia GTX 1650 graphics card.
Again, the ASUS L510MA-DS04 will do the basics of running two or three apps at once provided you’re not opening dozens of windows at the same time. 128GB of storage is a bit lean, but it’s more than double the 64GB of storage you find on most Chromebooks and competing Windows 10 notebooks.
Battery Life
The low-power fanless CPU and low-res screen all contribute to remarkable power savings. In our ASUS L510MA-DS04 review unit, you have a medium-sized battery, and if you keep things light, you’re getting 11 hours of battery life. that’s excellent.
Our Rating | Good
The Asus L510MA-DS04 is a budget laptop for learners and college students, portable and versatile compared to competing Chromebooks, with nearly all-day battery life.
Pros
- Very light & portable
- Affordable
- Great value
- Good battery life
Cons
- Middling keyboard
Conclusion

However, the screen’s low resolution and average keyboard keep it from earning our Editors’ Choice award for budget college laptops. A few dollars more with the Acer Aspire 5 or Lenovo IdeaPad 3, both of which offer better performance, full Windows 10, and a better processor.
