Design
The AOC U2790VQ’s 27-inch 4K screen stands on an elegant, rounded base with a thin chin that looks like it’s made of gunmetal aluminum. Although looks can be deceiving, the whole thing is made of plastic, but that doesn’t detract from the monitor’s sleek design and chic appearance. You’ll especially love the oval hole in the column to organize all of your attached cables.
AOC describes this design as a three-side-frameless because its sides measure a little over a millimeter, which means you can have multiple monitors on your side for seamless multitasking.
There are no buttons on the AOC U2790VQ, save for the hard-on/off switch placed next to the power input, as all of its functionality can be accessed via the mini-joystick and on-screen display (OSD). Connectivity comes via two HDMI (1.4 and 2.0), DisplayPort, D-Sub, and a 3.5mm headphone out jack, as well as a pair of 2-watt speakers.
Good Performance
As mentioned earlier, the AOC U2790VQ is built on a premium IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel with native 4K resolution, which is perfect for productivity, especially when working on tasks that require fine details. is required. That means it has wide 178-degree off-center viewing, a crisp 163 PPI pixel density, and well-saturated colors. Its wide color gamut (AOC quotes it at 108% sRGB) guarantees its color accuracy. At 1,000:1, the steady contrast ratio is fine, although its brightness is low at 350 cd/m2.
As for productivity, the 60Hz refresh rate is respectable, so there’s a 5ms response time, and the 16:9 screen, supposed to be backlit by LEDs, is as crisp as you’d expect. So, it doesn’t have the superfast 120Hz refresh rate (or even higher) that you’d typically find with gaming monitors, and it lacks the HDR and local dimming that’s available on high-end monitors like the LG 34WN80C-B and the LG 34WN80C-B. BenQ SW271.
Even without extras like HDR and local dimming, this AOC monitor looks crisp, clear, and consistently shaded. Again, it manages to achieve the level of clarity required for Photoshop or video editing tasks. This is made possible by the rich 163 PPI, which lets you check out images on-screen, while the flicker-free WLED backlight is easy on the eyes.
As a general productivity monitor, it’s hard to blame the AOC 4K panel, but when it comes to gaming, the 60HZ refresh rate and 5ms response rate can be considered low. AOC also doesn’t include G-Sync or FreeSync, but even without any gaming features, the monitor’s native 4K games such as Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Forza Horizon 4 run smoothly at 3840 x 2160 resolution on the Xbox One X. Even without HDR.
If you’re using the AOC U2790VQ for entertainment on the side, the native 4K resolution and 16:9 screen come alive for your movies. However, the lack of HDR once again prevents colors from reaching their full potential. There’s a pair of integrated speakers, not so loud, but you have a headphone jack for hooking up your powerful audio solution.
Our Rating | Excellent
The AOC U2790VQ could be a sleek 4K monitor whose sharply priced undercuts different 4K monitors while not sacrificing style or appearance. It lacks HDR and USB-C, but there’s no shortage of detail and color accuracy.
Pros
- Superb design and build color quality
- Wide color gamut
- Crisp 4K resolution
- Great overall value
Cons
- Lack USB ports
- No HDR or adaptive sync
Conclusion
The AOC U2790VQ is an office monitor that’s well-priced for the features it offers, especially the 4K resolution and borderless design. This is definitely one you should buy unless you are looking for something rocker. Aside from the competitive pricing, it’s well specified for the office and it doesn’t disappoint anywhere else; With has razor-sharp image quality when showing UHD content, be it Photoshop, Forza Horizon 4, or just watching 4K movies.
Sure, it’s a pity that AOC didn’t include HDR for gaming or movie watching, but the highest resolution and color quality on this monitor makes up for that slight. Again, the lack of a USB-C port is a painful oversight, but if you don’t need one, this AOC U2790VQ monitor is easily the office monitor you’re looking for.
