SAMSUNG Odyssey G5 Series 32-Inch WQHD (2560×1440) Gaming Monitor, 144Hz, Curved, 1ms, HDMI, Display Port, FreeSync Premium (LC32G55TQWNXZA)
Curved gaming monitors like the Samsung Odyssey G5 are no gimmick. These wraparound screens are the best gateway to immerse yourself in the gaming world without the need for a clumsy headset.
The Samsung Odyssey variant we’re reviewing is a 32-inch iteration of the base series (model LC32G55TQWNXZA), which pushes curved gaming technology even further. It is the first monitor to have a 1000R curve, which eventually matches the natural curvature of the human eye. This is gaming talent at its finest.
It is a 32-inch panel with a 1440p resolution, 1ms response time, and a 144Hz refresh rate. It’s definitely a unique gaming monitor, with AMD premium support and a lower price tag than a competitor, the Samsung Odyssey G5 doesn’t have to do anything to prove its prowess… it’s got the job.

Design
In styling the Samsung Odyssey G5, Samsung focused on the gamer aesthetic, including two small LED lights on the front, an illuminated ‘Samsung’ logo in the middle, and a ring directly around the base attachment. Colors and effects are controlled via the OSD or you can turn it off entirely.
The bezels surrounding the screen are 9mm thick – not the thinnest, not like the AOC CQ32G1 and Scepter C355W-3440UN with the bezel-less design. When you get to the bottom of the logo, you find an OSD joystick that controls all monitor functions.
The styling continues at the rear with a host of smoothly ribbed lines that accentuate the monitor’s curvature. You don’t see any straight edges anywhere, with a pivot ring that seems to be in motion with modern textures. The monitor takes on a super-clean appearance once you’ve installed the input cover and run your cables upwards.
The stand is sturdy, however, with a slight wobble at the pivot point, but that’s nothing unusual for a large panel. Adjustments include a height of 4.7 inches, 15-degree and 9/13-degree tilt on either side, and a portrait mode. We’re not sure how to use the 1000R monitor in portrait mode, but for whatever reason you think, this is one of those screens that can do just that.
OSD Features And Calibration
Samsung added its gaming-style OSD to the 32-inch Odyssey G5. At the top, you can see the Always Black equalizer setting, the response time (overdrive), refresh rate, adaptive-sync (supports G-Sync or FreeSync) status, and low input interval setting. All the options come with six sub-menus.
Out of the box, the Samsung LC32G55TQWNXZA is set to its custom picture mode, with all image controls intact. Even with a few tweaks, you can’t really improve the quality and accuracy of an already excellent picture. Probably, the only thing you can change is the Sharpness slider, which you may have to lower to remove the slight ringing effect of the monitor. In HDR mode, you can adjust the brightness, perhaps maxing it out, and set local dimming to auto for an excellent HDR image.
All the ports are located on the back – an HDMI, DisplayPort, USB 3.0 (for service), and a 3.5mm audio jack that accommodates headphones or powered speakers. The monitor does not have built-in speakers.
Gaming Performance
The extreme curve of the Samsung Odyssey G5 is a significant asset not only when it comes to gaming, but for general use as well. While a screen with a 21:9 or 32:9 cover will cover even more of the user’s peripheral vision, the 32-inch monitor’s height really brings you closer, giving you a natural view of workday tasks. You can keep documents on the center screen while balancing the utilities by the edges. In fact, you can view a full page in a word processor or 60 lines of a spreadsheet.
As for gaming, you’ll hardly find any flaws in the 32-inch Odyssey G5’s gaming performance. AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync compatibility both work equally well, running at 144Hz with HDR via DisplayPort input. Tomb Raider hits 139 frames per second (fps) several times with a sustained speed of around 135 fps. To that, add a super-fast panel response and you have fluid motion and input lag completely free of artifacts. Its other sibling, the Samsung Odyssey G7 maxes out at 240Hz frame rates, and on both monitors, that extra height really pulls you into the game.
When you engage High Definition Resolution, you get a rare treat. Samsung Odyssey G5 monitor does HDR really well, with effective selective dimming. You may not easily notice the change in light levels in practice, but you will certainly notice additional dynamic range. Its blacks are very deep and well-detailed, and thanks to the high peak brightness, highlights pop. Frame rates in Call of Duty: WII dropped slightly during testing, due to the additional HDR processing load. However, speed remained around 129fps with peaks at 132fps.
